Red Hook, a post-industrial neighborhood in Brooklyn, is a programmatically stratified place rich in potential, but still a ghost of its former self. The challenge for this project was to unify multiply aspects of the urban fabric by reorganizing the master plan around two hook-shaped arteries which overlap in the neighborhood’s center. . The new center is also intersected by smaller, rezoned bands of program, which connect the Red Hook Houses, a low income housing project, to the new center. The nine blocks of housing were reprogrammed and each individual block was then re-landscaped to produce a more environmentally friendly structure. Finally, the interiors of the Red Hook Houses were re-conceptualized with a greater range of apartments. The tightly packed arrangement was then interrupted by new circulation paths that pushed, pulled and ultimately transformed the face of the houses. As a result, the Red Hook Houses would become a more diverse, more pleasant place to live and would play a pivotal role in the success of the proposed master plan simultaneously developed.
